Valuable CO2 in Renewable Ethanol

VALUABLE CO₂ IN RENEWABLE ETHANOL

Adding even more value to renewable byproducts in Manildra Group’s zero-waste processes
of advanced manufacturing, a rich source of biogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) is captured with
our sustainably certified ethanol production, for diverse uses by industries across Australia.

Unlocking the economic potential of large-scale greenhouse gas mitigation, more than
50,000 tonnes of biogenic CO₂ are captured annually inorganic fermentation of renewable
ethanol from residual starch and piped to Supagas and BOC liquefaction plants onsite at
Shoalhaven Starches, on the New South Wales south coast.

Complementing Manildra Group’s paddock-to-plate approach to supply chain sustainability
Supagas and BOC use our 100 per cent Australian, food-grade CO₂ to produce liquefied CO₂
for essential local applications – from dry ice in frozen food transport to carbonating fizzy
drinks improving food shelf-life, and for gaseous fire suppression.

Using Manildra Group’s biogenic CO₂ for such applications further enables our partners to
avoid burning natural gas, to reduce fossil fuel dependence while providing industry-leading
solutions to local markets.

We acknowledge the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change emphasis
on technologies needed to further remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere while we
continue to abate emissions to restrain global temperatures. Manildra Group recognises a
key step towards climate neutrality is the value-adding reuse of CO₂ from production
processes – with multiple environmental benefits – as we explore ongoing opportunities to
expand our capacity and capabilities in biogenic CO₂ capture for the highest-quality,
renewable products.

FAST FACTS:

  • In renewable ethanol production, we capture more than 50,000 tonnes of biogenic
CO₂ annually for further value-adding uses
  • Our 100 per cent Australian CO₂ is liquefied for use in local industries from food
preservation and beverage carbonation to fire suppression
  • Using biogenic CO₂ instead of burning natural gas reduces fossil fuel dependence
    and lowers greenhouse gas emission
