Showcasing transformative innovations in sustainable seaweed production for superfoods to
medicine, an Australian plant-based alternative to the anti-aging molecule hyaluronic acid is
being developed to better heal burns and wounds.
Phyaluronic acid is a bioactive molecule uniquely derived from seaweed absorption of
nitrogen and carbon dioxide, recycled through Shoalhaven Starches’ sustainably circular
production stream, to convert the waste byproducts into a potentially life-saving technology
trademarked by Venus Shell Systems, working with the University of Wollongong to harness
groundbreaking potential for tissue regeneration, collagen protection and enhanced wound
healing.
Phyaluronic acid has demonstrated its capability to create full-thickness skin tissue – a
critical achievement in wound care – in further collaboration with pioneering Western
Australian burns specialist, Dr Fiona Wood, on a therapeutic solution to improved
treatments in hospital settings.
